The «Greater Region» is the major cross-border region of Europe, consisting of Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate, Lorraine, Luxembourg and Wallonia. Other cooperation initiatives exist in the same territory, such as the SaarLorLux Euroregion. In the article the meaning of «region» has been previously analyzed as an intermediary of spatial, temporary and social scales. Then it is debated if the Greater Region is characterized as having become institutionalized according to the concept of the four stages of institutionalization developed by the geographer Anssi Paasi (1986): (1) evolution and establishment of a territorial shape; (2) creation of institutions bound to this territory; (3) existence of symbols associated with this territory, and (4) evolution of a regional identity as part of the system of regions.
